“We would like to express our profound gratitude to everybody involved in realizing
this album. Guido and Pim, not only are you brilliant ‘sound wizards’, your patience
and kindness made the recording sessions such an inspiring experience. Pet, even in
difficult times you just can’t take bad photos, you’re the best! Ignace, thank you so
much for the informative, on point liner notes, and Penny, thanks for your elegant
translation! To Art & Jeroen, we don’t know where to start thanking you. You made
our dream come true…
We dedicate this album to our Viennese professors Paul Gulda, Roland Keller and
Noël Flores. We are deeply grateful for the insight you have given us into Vienna and
its monumental musical heritage.”

CD ''Magical Garden''
REVIEWS

''In the (original) piano version - which applies to all the pieces recorded by this duo – you suddenly hear all kinds of details in the voice leading and in the harmony too, which one might easily fail to notice in the version for orchestra. This is certainly true here, for this performance is a fairy tale in itself. The interpretation by this duo reveals great musical unity. The effect is overwhelming which also applies to the exquisite differentiation and the extremely varied, magnificent display of colour flourishing from this performance. This refinement is also present in the projection of the many different mood-pictures, ranging from joy and exuberance in Bizet’s ‘Children’s games’ right up to the ethereal sound in the finale of Ravel’s ‘Mother Goose’.''
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
''Die beiden Musiker spielen mit größtmöglicher Frische, nuancenreich und mit viel Liebe zum kleinen, pittoresken Detail. Das sind Interpretationen, die von reifer Musikalität und großer Intensität zeugen, spannungsgeladen und phantasievoll den Zuschauer fesseln von der ersten bis zur letzten Note.''
-Pizzicato, Remy Franck's Journal about Classical Music, Luxembourg

''The two musicians play with engaging freshness, rich in nuances and with much love for small, picturesque details. These are interpretations that show a mature musicality and great intensity, full of excitement and imagination captivating the listener from the first to the last note.''
⭐⭐⭐⭐
''Amacord speelt weliswaar met vier handen, maar op het oor met één muzikale geest, die de waaier aan kleuren en sferen kraakhelder
oproept.''

''Indeed, Amacord plays with four hands, but what we hear is one musical spirit evoking a crystal clear array of colours and atmosphere.''
⭐⭐⭐⭐
''Amacord legt steeds een goed getimed, fijnzinnig gearrangeerd kleurenspektakel aan…
Het spel in deze vierhandige parcoursen is ronduit fris, enerverend en karartervol.''
-Rudolf Nammensma, Dagblad vh Noorden
''Amacord continually builds up a perfectly timed, exquisitely arranged feast of colours...
Their performance in these four-hand compositions is utterly fresh, exciting and full of character.''

''En dat is te horen: dit is samen ademen, samen bewegen, samen zingen op het hoogste niveau.''

''And this is what you hear: breathing together, moving together, singing together at the highest level.''
''Magical Garden'' is a tribute to the imagination.''
''A world of fairytales, fantasy and children's games...''
''Debussy is a master in expressing a great deal in just a few notes.''
''This six-piece suite breathes the mysteriousness which is so in character with Debussy. The tone is mostly muffled, the tempo moderate to slow except for the last piece. Each part bears its own inscription (epigraph) which inspired Debussy to subtle colouring in the music.'' ''Sound colour, musical storytelling and a longing for times past and distant lands characterize the delicate atmosphere expressed by these compositions. ''In Bizet’s ''Children's games'' (Jeux dénfants) a child’s innocence prevails.'' ''The musical storyline suggests which game is intended. In ‘L’escarpolette’(The swing) the music flies up and down. The spinning movement in ‘La toupie’ (The top) speaks for itself, just like the light-footed, almost weightless flights in ‘Le Volant’(The shuttle) and ‘Les bulles de savon’ (Blowing bubbles). In the middle of all this fun and games Bizet introduces two moments of relaxation, first with ‘Colin-Maillard’ (Blindman’s buff) where a blindfolded child gropes around trying to touch another player, followed by ‘Petit mari, petite femme!.. where two children are playing mothers and fathers. The composition as a whole calls forth associations with Bizet’s predecessors.'' ''The five parts of Ma Mère L’Oye all refer to fairytales. Obviously, Laideronnette (part 3) and Beauty and the Beast (part 4) could not be left out. The Sleeping Beauty (part 1), Tom Thumb (part 2) and the Enchanted Garden (part 5) are also included. Ravel keeps a close track of the stories. High chirping notes for instance indicate that birds are pecking at the crumbs left behind by Tom Thumb. And a long glissando is a sure sign that the Beast is turning into a handsome prince. ''Although Ravel - in his own words - keeps his music as simple as possible, he has succeeded in creating an enchanted world.'' -Michel Khalifa 2019 -English translation: Penelope Sandford |
